There is a good article in the April 2006 edition of Fast Company on Medical Digital Records. These statistics are interesting:

1. Number of physicians in the U.S. = 700,300.
2. % of physicians who completely use digital records = 14%.
3. Number of physicians using Cerner Systems = 35,000.
4. Number of hospitals in the U.S. = 5,759.
5. % using some from of digital records = 50%.
6. Number of hospitals using Cerner Systems = 830.

The benefit of using digital records like Cerner, is that it has shortened the time for doctors to get paid from insurance claims from 2-3 months to 10-12 days. Talk about a huge improvement. Digital record keeping is also saving lives according to the article, because a patients information can be compared to other patience instantly and automatically in the system to warn of vulnerabilities to medications and home environments. This is one industry that has a slower adoption rate for technology when it comes to Medical Digital Records.
